All good tips, as a Kiwi (no snakes or other nasty beasts) I was a bit hyper aware on my first hikes in Australia, but the reality is that it’s fairly rare to see snakes while hiking. The most common places that people get bitten are hands and lower legs, so it’s a good idea to check before you sit on a log to see what’s underneath and if you are lifting things outside where you can’t see what’s under there do it cautiously with stick or with gloves on. You are more likely to get bitten by a spider anyway.

You guys have some pretty deadly snakes over there in the US too. You’re right that the danger is avoidable if you take the proper precautions. I look far from fashionable in my comfort and practical hiking gear haha

Great tips! I grew up on a farm in a swampy area of Arkansas, USA that was swarming with every species of venomous snake found in North America (except the coral snake). City folk thought we wore boots as a fashion statement. Nope, they were necessary. If you take precautions, it is avoidable.

My husband used to have snakes as pets too. He keeps suggesting we get one but not thank you! I don’t mind seeing them in the wild but certainly don’t want one in my house!

Great tips. I always worry about coming across snakes when camping. I’m definitely not a fan of them, and my husband used to have two as pets.

Ha! I’m not surprised by your reaction – I think I would have jumped out of my skin! I once went to a reptile place in South Africa where they had little mechanical things that tapped you on the ankle or blew a gust of wind at your neck as you walked around. That was a freaky place!
