This little girl makes me proud constantly, but there was something extra touching when she started to want to come with me on little photography expeditions. We got her a little camera for Christmas this year and she was quick to get the hang of it. Nallan Station is such a fun place for a special Mummy-Maddie excursion. We walked around the lambs and calfs, through the big sheds and had a good old explore. Station stays are so good for this. Stations aren’t zoos, they are working pastoral properties and bringing the girls here will hopefully give them a good grounding and understanding of where our food comes; the balance we have to achieve between farming for our needs and over grazing and environmental impact. Hows this for a coincidence? . This is the Big Bell Hotel, or what remains of it. The town of Big Bell was established in 1936 to house workers for the new Big Bell mine adjacent. The mine closed in 1955 taking the lifeblood of the town with it... a common story throughout the mineral-bearing regions of WA (so most of it). The town was abandoned thereafter and has been left for the land to reclaim. This is a fascinating ghost town to explore and one of the best preserved. You can still walk the streets and visit the church ruins. Interesting information signs abound telling the history of the place. Now here is the cool part... . So my neighbour told me before we left home that her father worked in the mine here and lived in town. This piqued my interest. I'm a sucker for a personal connection. When I pulled up to the old hotel (on my own - mummas day off :) ) there was only one other person; a young guy en route north who was stopping in as his grandfather and great grandfather worked there. He was revising his family history. After a while a couple of grey nomads turned up. I love a good yarn so we got chatting and I told them how excited I was that my neighbours father worked here AND so did that guy over there's grandad and great grandad. The lady was smiling knowingly. "I can beat that" she said, "I was born here... 72 years ago today". . No sh%t!! She had returned to the town to try and find the house she was born in, or at least the plot. We walked around for about half an hour while she told me about her first three years at Big Bell before moving on, how she didn't remember anything of her years there, but that her father ran the ice works - a site marked on the town map. This is what I love about travel and chatting to random strangers - we get to know and be part of so many extraordinary happenings. 📍Traditional land of the Badimia people. . How cute are Jed and Lettie? Here he is giving her a sleepy cuddle at The Granites at Kirkalocka. Our littlest girl has been so patient with all the driving of late, but the plus side is she will get to play around fun places like this. Just like her older sister Maddie, Lettie seems to enjoy playing with rocks. Girls after my own heart (YAY!). We failed miserably at finding this spot on our first occasion but Blair offered to drive out with us so we could see it for ourselves. This granite outcrop is HUGE! it sprays for several hundred metres scattered with pools of rain water. Maddie and her new best friend Andie played around the rock and - much to our chagrin - jumped in all the puddles getting pretty soaked haha. Traditional land of the Badimia people. . How cool is this? After hearing about my love of all things geology our station host Blair pointed us towards this cool outcrop. Most of the land in this region is weathered reddish-orange sandstone with the occasional granite monolith thrown in. But just a few km west of the homestead and visible from the Great Northern Hightway is this quartz ridge - quite literally a big 3m tall white wall of pure quartz. Some of the boulders falling from it were a metre or two across. Thats the biggest I've ever seen. Way cool! And a beautiful location too. . Images copyright belongs to Suzanne Jones. 📍Traditional land of the Badimia people. . Maddie always has much fun looking around the old buildings on stations. I am hoping to utilise this curiosity during home schooling and teach her about history. This is way better than a class room :D How charming is this living room? Built in 1909 the original Kirkalocka homestead has been lovingly preserved. Stepping in is like stepping back in time. The best news; you can even rent a room here! You can dine in the dinning room, prepare your lunch in the original kitchen and read a classic in this lounge. Can you imagine if walls could talk? Will I stay a night here? Absolutely not. She used to be a little shy when we first met new people but the longer we spend on the road (this time 3 weeks) the more she comes out of her shell. She seeks out other young children to play with and is becoming quite an outgoing little girl. There are two pony's at Kirkalocka. They belonged to an indigenous man who used to work there but he sadly passed away some time ago. We bumped into Black Pony white exploring around the stream that runs past the homestead. What a glorious place this is! If you walk a few hundred metres from the crossing you come to a wonderfully lush oasis with long grasses on either side. 📍Traditional land of the Badimia people. . Getting up early to explore around camp is ALWAYS worth it! Especially when camp is a 25,000km2 station in @australiasgoldenoutback. Welcome to Kirkalocka Station. Branching out from the main homestead and camping area several tracks. After a few wrong turns (and spending about two hours wandering down very overgrown tracks that may or may not have crossed onto a neighbouring property) we massed this impressive outcrop. The morning haze made for quite an atmospheric scene. I don't know how many times a day we say "oh wow", or "jeez, look at that!" but it is A LOT. 📍Traditional land of the Badimia people. . How many caravan parks do you know with a petting zoo? I cannot think of any. This is why we LOVE station stays! Oh we had so much fun at Kirkalocka Station near Mt Magnet. There is just so much to explore. We camped up behind the shearers quarters not far from the small sheep and goat pens (who sure were happy to get our food scraps :) ) The facilities are rustic with SO much charm and we had everything we could need. Is it just me or is showering in hot water warmed by a donkey boiler just so much more enjoyable? Maybe it's just that we're truly filthy from camping and reallllyyy need that wash down - who knows haha. The best part of our stay, without a shadow of a doubt, was Maddie making bestest friends with little Andie, daughter of the lovely station owners Jared and Blair. The two girls played for hours each day and Maddie was heartbroken when it came time to leave - but that just means we need to go back and explore the station all over again :) and we cannot wait! . So this is a little out of my timeline but I couldn’t wait to share... what an incredible Sunday afternoon we had! We went on an impromptu beach drive with some friends we haven’t seen in waaayyyy too long. Not long after getting into the sand some other beach goers pointed out a whale to us. We parked up and sat for hours watching this gorgeous southern right whale as the sun went down. Next a pod of dolphins came past hunting putting in a show. The kids had a whale of a time (like what I did there 😬😉) playing climbing and then sliding down the dunes and the babies eating handfuls of sand 😆🤭 this is living!
